Youth Small Group Sessions, Adult Sessions
and Adult Workshops

Youth Small Group Sessions

YSFC (Youth Strike for Christ) believes in small group times with youth to really help the youth get into there faith and ask questions.  Each small group will have about 12 youth and one youth leader.  The youth in these small group are all about the same age.  YSFC modeled this from Jesus and his 12 disciples.  Jesus used the small group time with the disciples as an opportunity to teach more in-depth lessons.

There are 4 small group session for the youth.  They follow the theme "Live Out Loud"
They are as follows:

Session 1: Live Out Loud

Session 2: Live Out Loud

Session 3: Live Out Loud

Session 4: Live Out Loud

This year YSFC has different small group lesson plans for high school youth and junior high school youth.  We realize that junior high youth are in a different place in their faith journey than high school youth.  The following links are the lesson plans for YSFC

Youth Ministry Apps: Ministry Applications that can help strengthen, broaden, deepen and form your local church’s youth ministry will include:

App 1:  Youth Ministry and Camping & Retreats:  Will examine setting retreat ministry goals, effective scheduling, curriculums possibilities, themes, volunteer recruitment, transportation and fundraising.  Come to hear some new ideas and/or share some of your own good ideas during the discussion time.

Photo - Gary Wilson Gary Wilson has been involved in camping ministry since he was on summer staff in 1996, at Pocono Plateau, a UM camp in PA.  He has a degree in education and has worked full time as a middle social studies teacher, camp facilities director, church youth director and now site director at Pictured Rocks UM Camp in Monticello.

App 2:  Youth Ministry and Missions, Service, & Social Justice:  Faith without works is DEAD! It's that simple. Either recharge your batteries through mission, service and justice or your faith will quickly die. Come join the conversation on how to recharge to the fullest.

Clint Twedt-Ball is a dad, husband, pastor and lover of life. He has worked in churches large and small. Currently, he directs a faith-based non-profit called the Matthew 25 Ministry Hub in Cedar Rapids. He loves the challenge of doing what some tell him can't happen in ministry.

App 3:  Youth Ministry and Higher Education & College Ministries:   The move from high school to whatever comes next (work, college, etc.) is a HUGE one.  How might your congregation and youth ministry help your older youth celebrate and prepare for those transitions, stay connected with them and help them find a new family of faith once they’ve moved on?  Come learn and share ideas!

Jim Shirbroun is in his 13th year as Campus Pastor and Associate Directory of Wesley Foundation at Collegiate United Methodist Church/Wesley Foundation in Ames at Iowa State University, having “finally made it to college” after about a dozen years in Youth Ministry.  He is the spouse of one (Beverly) and the parent of three (Mark, Greg and David).

App 4:  Youth Ministry and Spiritual Formation & DiscipleshipYouth ministry must be grounded in life-shaping encounters with God.  In many cases this is lived out through continued growth in Christian community, while for some it is most visible in a transformative conversion moment.  In this App, we will explore ways to cultivate Christian community within our ministries, teach spiritual disciplines as a way to focus on God’s presence, and share our own faith as a model and invitation for youth.  We will consider early Methodist class structure as a model for Christian life and remind ourselves that youth spiritual formation happens outside of classes and meetings as well as within them.  In all of this we will remember that discipleship depends more on caring Christian relationships than specific programs or curriculum.

Sean McRoberts is an ordained elder in the Iowa Conference of the United Methodist Church, and currently serves at First UMC in Ames, Iowa.  He is passionate about helping Christians find ways to live as citizens of the Kingdom of God through building communities of Justice, Love, and Unity.

App 5:  Youth Ministry and Calling: Before we tell our lives what we want to do, maybe we should listen to what our lives are telling us.  We will explore issues like Who You Are, What You Are, Why You Are the Way You Are.  Can we help others discern a call in their life unless we've reflected on our own life?

Dave Glenn-Burns is a campus minister at the Wesley Foundation in Cedar Falls.  Dave has been particularly interested in the whole issue of calling in general and the discernment of call to ministry in particular.  He is on the Iowa Conference Board of Ordained Ministry work group on Candidacy for ministry.
